Bravecto® is a product, manufactured by MSD, that is used for the treatment of ticks, mites and fleas in dogs and cats. The efficacy of the product is 90-95% and it is effective for 3 to 4 months after a single dose. It is therefor a very effective product for the treatment of ticks, mites and fleas.
During the last few months the media and social media have been buzzing(again) with the dangers associated with the use of Bravecto®. Some owners have claimed that Bravecto® is the cause for serious illness, more specifically neurological problems, in their dogs, and even death in some cases.
To date, there has been no scientific proof that Bravecto® is the cause of neurological problems in patients. Tests have shown that patients tolerate overdoses of Bravecto® very well without any adverse side effects. Personally I have had no complaints with regards to adverse side effects in dogs from any of my clients using Bravecto®. I have been in contact with various other veterinarians (across South Africa) with regards to the product with no problems on their side either. Caution should however be taken when using Bravecto® in patients younger than 8 weeks and those that are weighing less than 2 kilograms. The product hasn’t been tested in these patients (see product packaging). It is safe to use for dogs intended for breeding and in pregnant and lactating bitches.
As client, you are more than welcome to discuss the product with me. I would advise clients using the product, to report any problems that you experience with the product to us at Beaufort Dierekliniek, so that we can report it to the manufacturer. If your dog-child suffers from epilepsy and seizures please use the product with caution and monitor them closely for any adverse side-effects.
